I have two caravans in operation, yet one of them had its income slowly decrease and then vanish off of the income tooltip (not even in deficit, just not appearing). The caravan leader is still in my clan, and the caravan is stil fully manned and travelling around the map.
When you go into a town, look for a merchant. By interacting with a merchant within a settlement, there will be an option to “Set up a caravan in this town,” this is what you want to pick. Yeah, but you need about 2000 to start with for it to work. Just send out caravans over and over again. Its boring as hell, but it's really the only way you have to make decent amounts of money in this game other than pillaging and owning fiefs. Talk to the mayor, and ask about sending caravans. #1.

Yeah they changed it, there's no longer an upkeep cost but there's also no longer a daily income either, as far as I can tell you only get money when your caravan actually makes trades. but to be honest I haven't actually followed one around to be sure.

Not gaining even 1 XP on a 5-10k trade seems rather odd. I know that the amount of XP you need to level increases, but the base value for gaining XP should be the same. I used to gain XP even on smaller profits in the 500-1k range, but not any longer. alright now try the same trade with a caravan that doesn't reduce its prices after 10 items
Caravans don't make no money because they do make money. It might not be a ton but its a nearly limitless amount of free income. Make sure their scouting and riding is as high as possible to avoid ambush and they should live for many years. Caravan is a noob trap, theyre useless wastes of money.
